    Background: The revolutionary six-wheeled Elf Tyrrells driven by Jody Scheckter of South Africa and Frenchman Patrick Depailler finally broke the Ferrari stronghold, when they came first and second respectively in the Swedish Formula One grand prix on Sunday.

    SYNOPSIS: After a string on nine successive grand prix wins, the Ferraris took on an aura of invincibility. But in Anderstorp, Sweden, they had to make do with third and sixth places from world champion, Niki Lauda of Austria and Switzerland's Clay Regazzoni.

    The race began with American Mario Andretti, in a John Player Lotus, snatching a shock lead, and he drew steadily away from the rest of the field. His hopes were dashed on the 28th lap when he received a one minute penalty for jumping the start.

    Scheckter, in car number three, drove a steady race, to beat Depailler in car four by 19 seconds. Depailler came under pressure from New Zealander Chris Amon, but he left he track on the 38th lap and limped away from his badly damaged car.

    Lauda started fifth on the grid and was unable to make any headway on the leaders. He moved up to third place only after Andretti's penalty and Amon's crash. In the closing laps he appeared content to maintain his position and gain another four world championship points, which leave him still clearly at the top of this season's ladder.

    The four wheels at the front of the Tyrrells give them added control on tight corners. The car only started in Grand Prix competition in the Spanish race last month.

    This time, Scheckter piloted his way through the race in confident style.

    Scheckter finished the 179 kilometre course 19 seconds ahead of Depailler and 31 seconds faster than Lauda.
