Background: IT IS NOW KNOWN THAT MORE THAN ONE HUNDRED PEOPLE HAVE DIED IN THE MONSOON FLOODS AND STORMS WHICH HAVE SWEPT INDIA IN THE PAST FEW DAYS.

THE JUMNA RIVER HAS ALREADY FLOODED SIXTY VILLAGES AND BURST INTO THE LOW-LYING SLUM AREAS OF NEW DELHI. ABOUT TWENTY-FIVE THOUSAND ACRES OF LAND ARE UNDER WATER, AND ABOUT THIRTY FIVE THOUSAND PEOPLE ARE HOMELESS.

IN THE PUNJAB, MORE THAN FORTY PEOPLE DIED WHEN THEIR MUD HOUSES COLLAPSED AFTER BEING UNDERMINED BY FLOODWATERS. AT BIHAR, SIXTY PEOPLE WERE REPORTED MISSING (TUESDAY) AFTER A FERRY CAPSIZED AND SANK IN A STORM WHILE CROSSING THE SWOLLEN KANKAI RIVER.

MANY OF THE HOMELESS HAVE LOST ALL THEIR POSSESSIONS, EXCEPT THOSE THEY COULD CARRY. EVEN IF THERE IS NO MORE RAIN, THE PEOPLE CAN EXPECT NO RELIEF FROM THE FLOODS BEFORE TONIGHT.

OFFICIALS IN DELHI, AND THE NEIGHBOURING DISTRICT AUTHORITIES HAVE HELPED IN EVACUATION AND IN PROVIDING RELIEF FOR THE THOUSANDS AFFECTED BY THE FLOOD.
