Background: Indian Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi visited the U.A.R. Embassy in New Delhi on Tuesday (29 September) to sign the Book of Condolence of President Nasser.
Mrs. Gandhi was accompanied by her Foreign Minister Mr. Surinder Pal Singh and other ministers of the Indian Government.
Among the numerous messages of grief and regret that have been flooding into Cairo was cable from Mrs. Gandhi to the Acting President of the U.A.R., Mr. Anwar Sadat.
In the cable Mrs Gandhi paid tribute to President Nasser as a great leader of the non-aligned world. She recounted with respect the role he had played in giving meaning and content to the concept of Non-Alignment.
There has been a constant flow of cabinet ministers and dignitaries to the U.A.R. Embassy in New Delhi to express their sorrow personally to the Ambassador and to sign the Book of Condolence.
The flag at the Embassy has been flying at half mast since the death of the President, and the flags at Government and some private buildings are now also at half mast.
