THE LEADER OF THE ARMY-BACKED COUP, MAJOR-GENERAL JAAFAR EL-NIMEIRY, TOLD TRADES UNIONISTS AT THE RALLY THAT THE REGIME WOULD WORK FOR THE CONSOLIDATION OF THE ARAB NATION WITH A VIEW TO REMOVING "CONSEQUENCES OF AGGRESSION AND END ISRAELI EXISTENCE IN THE ARAB LAND".

    THE MARCHERS INCLUDED UNIVERSITY TEACHERS, DOCTORS, JOURNALISTS, STUDENTS, TRADERS, ENGINEERS AND MEMBERS OF WOMEN'S ORGANISATIONS.

    THE ARMY-BACKED CABINET DECLARED ON MONDAY A PUBLIC HOLIDAY AT THE REQUEST OF THE ORGANISERS OF THE RALLY -- TRADE UNION GROUPS, THE SUDAN TEACHERS' ASSOCIATION AND GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES.

    GENERAL NIMEIRY SAID THAT THE SUDAN WOULD CO-OPERATE WITH OTHER COUNTRIES IN AN EFFORT TO MAINTAIN WORLD PEACE, BASED ON PEACEFUL CO-EXISTENCE AND MUTUAL RESPECT OF SOVEREIGNTY.

    THE NEW PRIME MINISTER, ABU BAKR AWADALLAH, ALSO ADDRESSED THE MASS RALLY. HE IS THE ONLY CIVILIAN IN THE NEW GOVERNMENT, NINE ARMY MAJORS AND COLONELS MAKE UP THE REST OF THE 10-STRONG "REVOLUTIONARY COUNCIL."
