  • Description

Former EOKA leader, General George Grivas, arrived at Corfu, Ionian Islands, Greece, August 10 about the m/t "Adrias". Passengers thronged the gangway to cheer and clap him as he disembarked. Reliable sources report that Grivas has bene summoned to the island by King Paul, who is holidaying there.

Grivas is fast becoming a real danger to Greco-Turkish and Anglo-Greek relations because of his refusal to recognize the Zurich-London agreements on the future of Cyprus, and of his frequent outspoken attacks on the Cypriot Government and leadership.

Differences between Grivas and Archbishop Makarios rose to a new high level August 8 when he refused to receive Bishop Anthimos of Kitium on his arrival from Nicosia with a personal message from Makarios.

In Cyprus August 11 a new underground movement - the "Cyprus Enosis Front" -- circulated leaflets inside the walled city of Nicosia, calling on Makarios to "walk the national line" to their "national desires and rights"........ENOSIS (Union with Greece.) The leaflets stated "We are a secret organisation which will struggle with every means using force if need be." It went on; "If Archbishop Makarios walks along the national line he will have us as his fanatical supporters. But if he deviates even slightly he will have us as his violent critics and even, perhaps, his opponents. We note with bitterness the attitude of self-interested circles towards heroic Dighenis (General Grivas). But he is not afraid of barks. Whatever he undertakes he will bring to conclusion."
