  • Description

THE CITROEN MOTOR COMPANY CALLED A PRESS CONFERENCE AT ITS WORKS IN PARIS TODAY (MONDAY) TO DENY THAT A FIRM AGREEMENT HAD BEEN REACHED WHICH WOULD MAKE THE ITALIAN COMPANY, FIAT, THE LARGEST SHAREHOLDER IN THE COMPANY. AN OFFICIAL SPOKESMAN SAID: "THERE IS NO QUESTION AND THERE NEVER WILL BE ANY QUESTION OF CONTROL BEING RELINQUISHED TO FIAT OR ANYBODY ELSE."
BUT ACCORDING TO INFORMED SOURCES QUOTED BY REUTER, THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT IS ALREADY RESIGNED TO THE CITROEN COMPANY COMING UNDER FIAT'S CONTROL. ACCORDING TO A SENIOR CITROEN OFFICIAL QUOTED BY THE NEWSAGENCY THE GOVERNMENT IS NOT HAPPY ABOUT THE IMPLICATIONS FOR FRENCH PRESTIGE, THE ECONOMY AND THE EMPLOYMENT SITUATION.

ACCORDING TO INFORMED SOURCES IN PARIS, THE FRENCH TYRE COMPANY MICHELIN, WHICH OWNS 56 PER CENT OF CITROEN, SIGNED A SECRET AGREEMENT WITH FIAT IN MULAN A WEEK AGO TO MAKE OVER A SUBSTANTIAL CITROEN HOLDING - REPORTED TO BE SOME 30 PER CENT - TO THE ITALIAN COMPANY.

THE COMBINATION OF FIAT AND CITROEN WOULD MAKE IT THE LARGEST CAR COMBINE IN EUROPE, TOPPLING VOLKSWAGEN FROM ITS PRE-EMINENT POSITION.
