Background: In Spain, hundreds of right-wing supporters attended a ceremony at Paracuellos near Madrid on Monday (7 November) to observe the 41st anniversary of mass executions by Republican authorities. The rightist say Santiago Carrillo, now the leader of the Spanish Communist Party, was responsible for the deaths. Also on Monday, at Barajas Airport in Madrid, Enrique Lister, who heads the Spanish Workers' Communist Party, returned to Spain after 40 years in exile.

SYNOPSIS: Commemoration for the deaths of thousands of right-wing prisoners in November 1936 was marked by the rally at a cemetery near Madrid, just one of the sites where, the demonstrators say, the bodies of 12,000 dead are buried. For 41 years, these mass graves gave been a rallying point for the Spanish Right. The dead they mourn included military prisoners and members of the aristocracy.

The man these people hold responsible for those deaths is Santiago Carrillo who was at the time a member of the Republican government. He is now leader of the Spanish communist Party.

Just a few hours later, one of Carrillo's rival for leadership of the Spanish left came back to Madrid after almost 40 years in exile. Enrique Lister returned to a boisterous welcome from the Spanish Workers Communist Party.

In the civil War, Enrique Lister was a general in the Republican army. He said he recalled all the Communists who died in the trenches of Spain, in the Soviet Union, and in German camps.

His reason for coming back, he said, was to lead the Workers Communist Party. His party is thought to follow the Soviet line. Referring to Senor Carrillo, Whose independent policies have brought a rebuff from Moscow, Lister called him 'a political gangster". Senor Carrillo was in Moscow for the celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of the Russian Revolution last week, but he was not invited to speak. since then, the Spanish Communist Party, which was legalised last April, has said it was not planning any rallies or demonstrations to mark the anniversary.

So far, the Spanish Government has not commented on Lister's return.
