  • Description

Strict security measures have been in force at Stanleyville, Belgian Congo, since the recent rioting there, in which more than 70 natives were reported to have been killed.

Government and other buildings in the town stand wrecked and burnt out after the fires started by the rioters. To guard against further trouble, the African population is being carefully screened by native police and troops in Government service. A curfew has been imposed, and no-one is allowed to enter Stanleyville at night without authority.

The Congolese nationalist leader Patrice Lumumba was arrested following the Stanleyville riots, but a state of tension continues and two of the largest African political parties have rejected the Belgian plan for independence in stages for the Congo. Congo nationalists have called for an international conference on the Congo's future.
