  • Description

IN PREPARATION FOR THE BIGGEST PROJECT YET IN TOKYO UNIVERSITY'S STRATOSPHERE RESEARCH PROGRAMME, A PROTOTYPE ROCKET WAS FIRED FROM SOUTHERN JAPAN LAST WEDNESDAY.

THE PROTOTYPE - DESCRIBED AS A LT-150-WAS FIRED TO TEST FACILITIES OF THE NEW CAPE UCHINOURA LAUNCHING SITE FOR THE LARGE LAMBDA ROCKET WHICH IS TO GO UP NEXT FEBRUARY.

TRACKING INSTALLATION AT UCHINOURA SUCCESSFULLY TRACED THE FLIGHT OF THE TEST ROCKET AS IT WENT UP IN AN ARC TO PLUNGE INTO THE PACIFIC, 175 MILES TO THE SOUTH. RESULTS CONFIRMED THAT NEW SITE WILL BE SUITABLE FOR THE LAMBDA ROCKET LAUNCHING.

(TOKYO UNIVERSITY'S LAUNCHING BASE, ORIGINALLY AT MICHIKAWA BEACH IN NORTHERN JAPAN, WAS MOVED TO THE SOUTH COAST OF KYUSHU ISLAND EARLY LAST SUMMER. AS THE STRATOSPHERE PROGRAMME ENTERED A MORE ADVANCED STAGE, IT WAS FEARED THAT LONGER-RANGE RESEARCH ROCKETS MIGHT ACCIDENTALLY DROP ON SOVIET TERRITORY.)
