    Somalia's permanent representative to the United Nations, Abdirizak Haji Hussein, held a news conference in New York on Friday (6 February) and denied that his country had amassed troops on the border with the French territory of Afars and Issas.

    He also denied that Somalia precipitated an attack on the border by firing first on French troops.

    With regard to the abduction of school children incident, Mr. Hussein told the news conference that he would like to make it clear that Somalia did whatever it could to prevent any harm from coming to the children.

    He said two of the so-called guerillas killed at the but site were in fact negotiators sent to explore the good offices of the Somalia Consul-General in Djibouti with the knowledge of French authorities.

    He said they also died unnecessarily as did the young French girl because of the "adventuristic handling of the situation by the French Government".

    Mr. Hussein was referring to an incident in Djibouti in which French children were rescued from a hijacked bus on the border between Somalia and Afars and Issas.

    There was shooting during the rescue and one of the children was killed.
