  • Description

With Belgian Congo independence just over one week away, and signs of possible unrest and violence to follow, many more women and children than normal have been joining in the annual summer migration of Europeans to their home continent.

At N'Djili airport, 17 miles from Leopoldville, June 21 it was a typical scene - in this case, queues of Europeans waiting to board a Sabena Boeing 707 bound for home. Most of them were women and children.

Each year, the peak travelling time for Europeans going home on leave is the months of May, June and July.

Most of the menfolk - with Congo careers to think of - are staying behind. Those whose families have gone home are expecting them to return in a month or two. Even from Stanleyville and Kiva provinces where there is more fear of violence only a few settlers have left for home.
