  • Description

Morocco has celebrated the second anniversary of the "Green March" in Rabat with parades and dancing.

SYNOPSIS: The celebrations which took place on Sunday (6 November) commemorate the call by King Hassan to his people to march on Spanish Sahara to lay claim to the territory.

In 1975 some 350000 unarmed moroccans joined the march. At the very last moment King Hassan stopped the march but not before some of the marchers had passed into Spanish territory. Spain has assembled soldiers to repel the marchers.

However, the march was a success. One week later spain ceded the territory to Morocco and Mauretania who split is between them. The achievement has been soured somewhat by Polisario guerrillas waging a desert war against Mauretania and Morocco for independence for the territory.
