  • Description

Soccer -- and top West German club side Borussia Monchengladbach thrashed the visiting Japanese national side 5-nil in a friendly game at their home ground on Saturday (19 February).

Borussia went on to score another three goals in the second half. The Borussia game was the first in the current Japanese tour of West Germany.

SYNOPSIS: Japan, in all blue, kick off but made a poor start --they played about with back passes in midfield, then quickly lost possession in the Borussia half. Then Borussia, who have several West German national players in their side, launched a counter-attack. Borussia have an unbeaten record against the Japanese side, both at home and in Japan. They beat the Japanese 3-1 in Tokyo in 1969 in one of several games in which the best the Japanese produced was a 1-1 draw.

This attack broke down under pressure from the Japanese defenders, and Japan went on the attack, but for not long. Saturday's game was the worst defeat they have suffered at the hands of the West German league champions, worse even than their 4-1 crash in West Germany in 1968. Borussia's first goal came in the 20th minute after the Japanese goalkeeper was caught well out of his area. The scorer -- Allan Simonsen, in the Number seven shirt.

The Japanese lacked the finishing power of the West German side. Time after time they failed to penetrate the Borussia defence, or hang on to possession, giving Borussia the chance to thrust upfield yet again.

Goal number two followed a foul inside the Japanese penalty area. A penalty was awarded and was easy work for Rainer Bonhof in the 32nd minute.

At two-nil down Japan tried to fight back but again their attack was unsuccessful -- they managed a shot at goal but it was an easy save for the Borussia goalkeeper.
