In Syria, the Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko has reaffirmed the Soviet Union's opposition to the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty. During his surprise three-day visit he met with Syrian President Lieutenant-General Hafiz Al-Assad, and during their talks they are reported to have discussed increased Soviet support for the Arab states who have rejected the treaty. The Soviet Union recently called the treaty an American-Israeli conspiracy.

SYNOPSIS: Mr. Gromyko arrived in Damascus on Saturday (24 March). He outlined the Soviet commitment to the Arab States who opposed the peace treaty. Informed sources said Mr. Gromyko was asked to translate Moscow's political support into arms supplies, to balance the United States military aid to Israel.
