Background: Lake Pai Yang Dien is a vast shallow-water lake on the expansive Great North China Plain. It is luxuriant with reeds and was a resistance base during China's war of resistance against Japan.

Back in the forties, the inhabitants of Lake Pai Yang Dien refusing to be slaves attacked the Japanese aggressors with their rifles and spears from every reed bush, every inlet and every lotus thicket. They struck mysteriously at the enemy and many were the pages they wrote with their feats.

The lake militia is having a routing military manoeuvre. As China commemorates the 20th anniversary of her victory over Japan, Sun Ge, a deputy commander of the former guerrilla forces, briefs militiamen on the guerrillas' arduous encounters with the enemy those days.

The guerrillas used these simplete, outdated weapons against the enemy who didn't know where to find the guerrillas and how to escape when attacked.

Chao Po, an outstanding guerrilla scout (man rowing alone) is now the head of a production brigade.Twenty years have elapsed and he is still as youthful. He is now coaching the younger generation on the new tactics of guerrilla warfare and how to deal with the enemy who dare to encroach on us.
