  • Description

On Friday ( 18 September ) the United States moved ships, troops and aircraft into the Eastern Mediterranean as the Jordan crisis continued. The Pentagon announced that the movements were made in support of a possible evacuation from Jordan.

The helicopter carrier Guam left Morehead City, North Carolina with a complement of 1,100 marines who embarked at the port.

Pentagon spokesman said they were taking precautionary steps involving elements of the Sixth Fleet, the Atlantic Fleet, and the prudent positioning of additional transport aircraft should they be required for evacuation.

The spokesman also said that United States is sending giant C-130 air transports to Greece and Turkey. Six transports moved to Incirlik, Turkey, about 12 days ago.

U.S. officials also indicated that both of the attack carriers now in the Sixth Fleet - the Saratoga and the Independence - have moved to the Eastern part of the Mediterranean.

The Fleet Flag-ship, the guided missile cruiser Springfield, left its home port of Geeta, Italy on Thursday ( 17 September ), for a position off Jordan.
