The Roman Catholic Bishop of Accra, the Right Reverend Joseph Bowers, has blessed the new St. Joseph's Catholic Church at Obo-Kwahu, in the eastern region of Ghana. The church, which was built by communal labour, cost about 6,000 new cedis (GBP33,000).
The ceremony was attended by thousands of Kwahu citizens from all over the country. The Nifahene of Kwahu traditional area, Nana Kofi Bediako rode in a palanquin during the procession to the new church. Bishop Bowers was escorted by members of the Knights of St. John. In an address at the ceremony, Nana Kofi Bediako praised the Roman Catholic Church for the part it has played in providing educational and social amenities for the people of Ghana. And he called on the people of Obo to undertake more development projects by using their own labour.
Mr. W.K. Mari and Mr. A. Koree, both Accra businessmen, each donated 50 new cedis following and appeal for funds to help the church. In all about 3,000 new cedis was collected. The Church is also constructing a three-classroom block which will cost about 2,000 new cedis.
