  • Description

Navy Captain, Jose Guillermo Burgos, who died in a hail of bullets when a Navy building was fired on from passing cars, was buried in Buenos Aires on Thursday (15 April) with full military honours.

The funeral was attended by Admiral Emilio Massera, a member of the ruling military junta, General Albano Harguindeguy, the Interior Minister, Admiral Isaac Francisco Rojas, leader of the 1955 anti-Peronist revolt, and hundreds of friends and relatives of the murdered captain.

Among the relatives was Captain Burgos' son who was so filled with emotion that he had to be assisted at one stage as the cortege made its way to the cemetery.

Police blamed left-wing guerrillas for the killing which brought to 115 the death toll in political violence in Argentina since the military seized power three weeks ago.

On the same day, three policemen were shot dead and a fourth seriously wounded in another incident.

The military government has introduced the death penalty for anyone who kills a member of the security forces.
