Background: On July the fourth last year, Israeli army commandoes carried out the famous raid on Uganda's Entebbe Airport to rescue a group of hostages from a hijacked airliner. Three hostages and one officer died in the raid, but more than 100 other hostages were freed. A memorial service was held in Jerusalem on Thursday (23 June) - the first anniversary of the event according to the Hebrew calender - for those who died in the raid.

SYNOPSIS: More than 500 people were at the small cemetery in Jerusalem for the ceremony. Among them was the new Israeli Prime Minister, Mr. Menachem Begin. The first part of the service was conducted by an army rabbi, then the crowd heard the Prime Minister say he hoped the present generation would not have to suffer such a scene again. The Israeli hostages, he said, had suffered a severe emotional shock as they were separated from the rest of the passengers on the aircraft by the hijackers. Mr. Begin also reminded people of the officer killed in the action -Lieutenant-Colonel Yonatan Netanyahu - as he led the main commando unit.

The rain on Entebbe was one of the most daring in modern history ever seen. The Israeli commandoes travelled more than 4,000 kilometres (2,500 miles) to free the hostages, and they returned to Israel to a heroes' welcome.
