  • Description

President de Gaulle suffered - and survived - an ordeal by suffocation yesterday (Wednesday) at the National University of Mexico, about 10 miles outside Mexico City. The university has 40,000 students and it seemed all of them crammed into the auditorium to welcome the President. Despite the fierce heat of the day and the effect of the thin air 7,500 feet (2560 meters) above sea level, the 74-year-old President good humouredly accepted the jostling of the students who all but mobbed him.

In his address, President de Gaulle stressed the closeness of links between France and Mexico, and appealed to national pride by raising Mexico to the status of world power. He predicted that in the future Latin America as a whole, and Mexico in particular, would play a greater part in European Affairs. (There has even been talk of special associate status for Latin America and the Common Market.)
This was the third day of the President's three-day state visit. His other engagements included a visit to the Franco-Mexican School and luncheon with the Chamber of Commerce.
