Background: Colchester - the forth Division British soccer team which last year were called "giant killers" when they defeated Leads United - today (Saturday, August 7) showed that they were still laying claim to the title when they defeated First Division West Bromwich Albion in the final for the Watney Cup.

After an excellent game which ended in a 4-4 draw after two goals in the last three minutes - one by Brian Lewis putting Colchester in the lead, and a second one minute later by Jeff Astle to equalise - then came seven more penalty kicks to break the tie, with the final goal going to Colchester for an 8-7 win.

SYNOPSIS: Fourth Division - in dark shirts - were last year's "giant Killers" when they defeated top League team Leads United. This Saturday they once again proved their worth against First Division west Bromwich Albion in an action-packed Watney Cup Final, taking an early lead with as goal by Mick Mahon.

West Bromwich renewed the attack and, in the fifteenth minute, Centello went clear through the middle for the equaliser.

Then came on exciting five minutes. A defensive error by Gilchrist allowed Astle to put West Bromwich In the lead in the thirty-second minute. Only sixty seconds later Colchester regained the ball and Simmons scores another equaliser.

Two minutes later a Centello cross was picked up by Hope For a drive back to Suggatt, who back-heeled past Smith putting West Bromwich in a three-two lead at the of the first half.

For the first twenty minutes of the second half, the action moved back and forth across the pitch - and it wasn't until the sixty-fifth minute of play that Mahon scored Colchester's equaliser with a long range drive.

With only four minutes to the end of the game - West Bromwich fouled against Colchester and the referee awarded a penalty which was taken by Brian Lewis - putting the three minutes to go.

But the thrills were not over yet - and West Bromwich Captain Astls equalised again one minute later, to end the game with a four-four tie.

Under the new rules in English saucer, the championship would now be decided by a series of alternate penalty kicks until one team could break the tie, And so, after seven additional goal kicks, Forth Division Colchester won the Watney Cup from First Division West Bromwich Albion by an eight to seven lead.
