  • Description

The British Post Office is using a blow-up plastic "igloo" to help speed many thousands of Christmas parcels on their way.

The Swedish-designed igloo is being used as a parcels sorting office at Twickenham, on London's western outskirts. It is kept inflated by fans which draw air into the igloo and maintain a pressure of about 16 pounds per square inch.

Nearly half a million parcels will pass through this blow-up sorting office in the three weeks before Christmas. It will handle parcels for all parts of the world posted in a wide area of the counties of Surrey and Middlesex.

The structure is 120 feet long, 60 feet wide and more than 20 feet high. More than 100 people can work inside it.

The Post Office will decide in the New Year whether it will keep the structure in use and whether it will order more of them for use as temporary sorting offices.
