    A UNITED NATIONS COMMITTEE HAS BEGUN HEARING IN CAIRO TO INVESTIGATE ALLEGATIONS OF ISRAELI MALTREATMENT IN AREA TERRITORIES OCCUPIED AFTER THE JUNE, 1967 WAR. FORTY WITNESSES ARE GIVING EVIDENCE, CONCERNING INCIDENTS MOSTLY IN GAZA AND SINAI.

    THE HEARING OPENED IN CAIRO YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) BEFORE MR. H.S. AMERASINGHE OF CEYLON, MR. ABDUL RAHIM ABBY FARAH -- THE SOMALI AMBASSADOR TO THE U.N. -- AND DR. BORUT BOHTE, ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF LAW AT LJUBLJANA UNIVERSITY IN YUGOSLAVIA.

    ONE OF THE FIRST WITNESSES WAS A PALESTINIAN ARAB, 28-YEAR-OLD MOHAMMED DERBAS, WHO CLAIMED THAT AN ISRAELI DOCTOR TORTURED HIM BY PULLING HIS FINGER NAILS OUT. DERBAS, A HOSPITAL ATTENDANT, ALSO SAID THAT HE WAS FORCED TO SIT ON AN ELECTRIFIED CHAIR WHILE THE ISRAELIS INTERROGATED HIM ABOUT ARAB ARMS.

    ANOTHER WITNESS, A BEDOUIN SHEIKH, SAID THAT ISRAELI FORCES BOMBED AND STRAFED A SINAI VILLAGE, SHOT SOME AT ITS INHABITANTS, LOOTED THEIR FOOD SUPPLIES AND POISONED THEIR WATER WELLS. SHEIKH SOLIMAN EL YAMANI ALSO TOLD THE COMMITTEE THAT SEVEN CHILDREN OF HIS TRIBE WERE AMONG 46 CHILDREN WHO DIED IN AN ISRAELI BOMBING RAID NEAR KANTARA TWO WEEKS AGO.

    THE COMMITTEE, WHICH HAS ALREADY VISITED AMMAN, DAMASCUS AND BEIRUT, WILL SIT IN CAIRO FOR FIVE DAYS.
