The city was abandoned following intense bombardment, both form Untied States bombing missions, and from the guns of the U.S. Seventh Fleet, for which the near-coastal city was an easy target.

In April, thirty thousand people left their homes to avoid the bombing. By November, most of the remaining seventh-two thousand original inhabitants had gone. Schools, churches and temples were all destroyed, and the people though it was hopeless to rebuilt when the bombs still rained down at regular intervals.

There were also six raids in which B-52 bombers carried out carpet bombing techniques, flattening whole sectors.
