    A flag raising ceremony on Thursday (8 October) was held at the United Nations headquarters in New York to mark the admission of Oman into the world organisation. Oman is a Sultanate in the middle east and its admission to the U.N. brings to seventeen the strength of the Arab group in the United Nations. Oman is the 131st member of the U.N., and Secretary General U Thant told officials present at the ceremony that the United Nations will benefit from the human, spiritual and material resources from its newest member.

    SYNOPSIS: Membership in the United Nations rose to 131 nations as the Middle East Sultanate, Oman, was admitted to the World Organisation.

    United Nations President Adam Malik, Secretary-General U Thant and Oman's Prime minister Tarik Alsaid were present at the flag raising ceremony held on Thursday. The admission of Oman to the United Nations raises the strength of Arab nations in the World Body to 17.

    U Thant told officials present at the ceremony that organised community of nations will benefit from the human, spiritual, and material resources from its newest member. He stated that he was glad that Oman has renounce its voluntary seclusion to participate in social and economic challenges of the world.
