  • Description

LYNDEN O. PINDLING BECAME THE FIRST NEGRO PREMIER IN THE HISTORY OF THE BAHAMAS ON MONDAY (JAN. 16). HE WAS SWORN IN AT GOVERNMENT HOUSE IN NASSAU BY SIR RALPH GREY, THE BRITISH GOVERNOR OF THE BAHAMAS.

IN THE ISLAND COLONY'S GENERAL ELECTION LAST WEEK, MR. PINDLING'S PROGRESSIVE LIBERAL PARTY AND THE UNITED BAHAMIAN PARTY (WHICH HAD FORMERLY GOVERNED THE ISLANDS) WERE TIED WITH 18 SEATS EACH IN THE COLONY'S PARLIAMENT. MR. PINDLING THEN GAINED THE SUPPORT OF THE SOLE LABOUR PARTY MEMBER ELECTED, GIVING HIM A MAJORITY OF ONE.

BEFORE THE SWEARING-IN CEREMONIES, MR. PINDLING AND HIS CABINET CHATTED BRIEFLY OUTSIDE GOVERNMENT HOUSE AND THEN WENT INSIDE FOR THE SWEARING-IN. THE NEW PREMIER ASSUMED THE PORTFOLIO OF MINISTER FOR TOURISM AND DEVELOPMENT, A KEY POSITION ON THE ISLAND. A SECOND KEY POSITION, THAT OF MINISTER OF FINANCE, WAS GIVEN TO CARLETON FRANCIS. THE TWO PORTFOLIOS ARE CONSIDERED VITAL BECAUSE THE BAHAMAS DERIVES MOST OF ITS INCOME FROM TOURISM.

MR. PINDLING IS THE SON OF A POLICEMAN AND WAS EDUCATED IN ENGLAND. HE HAS THREE CHILDREN. MR. FRANCIS IS THE PRINCIPAL OF A PRIVATE SCHOOL.
