Senator Edward M. Kennedy, Democrat, of Massachus???tts, met his challenger for the Senatorial election in that state in November, Josiah A. Spaulding, Republican. They faced a panel of reporters on NBC's "Meet the Press," filmed in Boston, Sunday. At the outsat, Kennedy said the basic issues in the American elections this year are: getting rid of the war in VietNam and getting on with the serious issues facing the American economy. He criticized the mismanagement of the American economy under the Republican Nixon administration, warned of the rising cost of living and rising unemployment, and the alarming increase in the crime rate.
Spaulding, Kenedy's opponent, agreed with Kennedy on most points. he said the VietNam war is counter-productive, and he didn't agree with Nixon on going into Cambodia. Arms races lead to war, he said and he didn't like Nixon's so-called "southern strategy," for getting support, politically, from Southerners in the USA. Spaulding wants population control. The real issue in the USA this year is jobs, Spaulding says.
