Background: ADEN FORCES HAVE JUST COMPLETED A SUCCESSFUL TWO-WEEK OPERATION AGAINST DISSIDENT TRIBESMEN IN THE SOUTH ARABIAN FEDERATION. THEY RETURNED TO BASE YESTERDAY (THURSDAY), AS THREE MEMBERS OF BRITAIN'S RULING CONSERVATIVE GOVERNMENT MADE AN ON-THE-SPOT ASSESSMENT OF THE SITUATION.

SUPPORTED BY CENTURION TANKS, ARMOURED VEHICLES AND HOWITZERS, BRITISH AND FEDERAL TROOPS WENT INTO ACTION AGAINST REBELS, ALLEGEDLY WITH YEMENI BACKING, IN THE THUMIER AREA 50 MILES (80 KMS) NORTH OF ADEN.

THE REBELS, EQUIPPED WITH AUTOMATIC WEAPONS, GRENADES AND MINES, HAD BEEN RAIDING THE FAMED DHALA ROAD TRADE ROUTE FROM ADEN TO THE YEMENI FRONTIER. NOW MOST OF THE TRIBESMEN HAVE OFFERED TO COME TO PEACE TERMS WITH THE FEDERATION.

MEANWHILE, FROM THUMIER, BRITISH AND FEDERAL TROOPS, ASSISTED BY LOCAL TRIBESMEN, ARE MOUNTING A CAMPAIGN TO IMPROVE COMMUNICATIONS AND SECURITY IN THE NEARBY RADFAN DISTRICT.

HELICOPTERS AND CAMELS ARE TRANSPORTING SUPPLIES TO RUGGED, INACCESSIBLE AREAS WHERE ROYAL ENGINEERS ARE SUPERVISING A GIANT ROAD-BUILDING OPERATION.

THEY ARE BLASTING THEIR WAY THROUGH SOLID ROCK INTO ANOTHER MOUNTAIN STRONGHOLD -- BUT THIS TIME OF DISSIDENT FEDERAL TROOPS, STIRRED TO REVOLT BY ALLEGEDLY CAIRO ARMS AND MONEY.

IT IS THE BIGGEST COMBINED OPERATION EVER STAGED IN THE FEDERATION, AND IS BEING BACKED BY A FORMIDABLE ARRAY OF BRITISH ARMS. SOME OF THE LABOURERS ARE THE SAME TRIBESMEN WHO OPPOSED FEDERAL FORCES ONLY LAST WEEK.

THE THREE BRITISH PARLIAMENTARIANS SHOWN ON FILM ARE (TOGETHER WITH THEIR CONSTITUENCIES): SIR PETER AGNEW (SOUTH WORCESTERSHIRE), MR VICTOR GOODHEW (ST ALBANS) AND MR PATRICK WALL (HATTEMPRICE, EAST RIDING). LATER, THEY WERE GOING ON TO SPEND A FEW DAYS IN SAUDI ARABIA WITH THREE LABOUR OPPOSITION MEMBERS.
