Background: A PORTRAIT BY REMBRANDT, BELIEVED TO BE OF HIS FATHER,IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ITEM IN A GROUP OF OLD MASTERS TO BE SOLD TOMORROW (FRIDAY) BY CHRISTIE'S, THE LONDON ART SALEROOM. THE HALF-LENGTH PORTRAIT SHOWS THE SITTER FULL FACE, WEARING A BLACK CAP WITH AN IMPOSING SINGLE BLUE OSTRICH FEATHER SECURED IN IT BY A GOLD CHAIN.

THE REMBRANDT IS BEING SOLD BY SIR BRIAN MOUNTAIN, CHAIRMAN OF AN INSURANCE COMPANY. HIS FATHER BOUGHT IT IN 1938 FOR GBP7,350 STERLING (17.640 DOLLARS).

IT IS THE THIRD REMBRANDT SOLD AT CHRISTIE'S IN FOUR YEARS. THE FIRST, A PORTRAIT OF HIS SON TITUS, WENT FOR GBP798,000 STERLING (1,915,200 DOLLARS), STILL THE HIGHEST PRICE EVER PAID IN EUROPE FOR A SINGLE WORK OF ART, AND THE SECOND, AN EARLY SELF-PORTRAIT, FOR GBP483,000 STERLING (1,159,200 DOLLARS).

AMONG OTHER OLD MASTERS IN THE SALE ARE TWO PAINTINGS OF THE HOLY FAMILY ON THE FLIGHT INTO EGYPT, ONE BY LUCAS CRANACH THE ELDER, THE OTHER BY IL BASSANO.

ANOTHER RELIGIOUS PAINTING IS CARLO CARLONE'S BEHEADING OF SAN FELICE, A STUDY FOR AN ALTAR-PIECE.

FINALLY THERE IS A TYPICAL PASTORAL SCENE OF SHEPHERDS WITH THEIR SHEEP BY DUTCH MASTER AELBERT CUYP.

THE WHOLE SALE SEEMS LIKELY TO BRING IN MORE THAN A MILLION POUNDS (2.4 MILLION DOLLARS.)
