    AMERICAN PROTEST MARCHERS FOR PEACE - MORE THAN 2,000 STRONG - ASSEMBLED IN MID-MANHATTAN, NEW YORK, AUGUST 6, AND WALKED ACROSS THE CITY TO THE UNITED NATIONS BUILDING TO TAKE PART IN A CANDLELIGHT VIGIL AS DARKNESS FELL. THE PROTEST COMMEMORATED THE 17TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DROPPING OF THE FIRST ATOMIC BOMB IN HIROSHIMA, SEVENTEEN YEARS AGO.

    DEMONSTRATOR WERE FROM VARIOUS PEACE GROUPS, INCLUDING THE 'WAR RESISTERS LEAGUE' AND THE 'NATIONAL COMMITTEE FOR A SANE NUCLEAR POLICY'. MANY REMAINED AT THE UNITED NATIONS ALL NIGHT. OTHER GROUPS MOVED ON TO THE SOVIET AND AMERICAN MISSIONS TO THE UNITED NATIONS TO PROTEST AGAINST NUCLEAR TESTING BY THE SOVIET UNION AND AMERICA.
