  • Description

As the Middle East War drew on Thursday (18 October) towards the end of its second week, Israeli Defence Minister General Moshe Dayan predicted that the critical battle for control of the Suez Canal would begin within a few days. He was speaking to newsmen after visiting his forces in Sinal. General Dayan was confident that Israel had gained the initiative on the Egyptian front. He said he was satisfied with the results achieved by an Israeli task force operating behind Egyptian lines on the west bank of the Suez Canal. Israel had claimed to have established a bridgehead across the waterway and to be reinforcing the vanguard with armour and artillery.

The Egyptians maintained that the infiltrating force was besieged and under attack at several points. They claimed to have downed 12 Israeli planes and destroyed many tanks in day-long engagements. The counter-claim from Israel was that the Egyptian tank strength now numbered only 800, less than half the number thrown into the War at its outset 12 days earlier.

On the northern battle-front, Israeli and Syrian ground forces carried their battle for the road to Damascus into its sixth day. The Israelis claimed to have drawn nearer to the strategic village of Sasa, which straddles the highway: the Syrians said they had repulsed them and knocked out 30 Tanks.
