Background: Troops from the Khmer Republic's seventh division recaptured the area around the besieged village of Sethbo on Highway 30 on Monday (7 May).
The Seventh Division has waged counter-attacks around Highway 30 for more than a week, but this was their greatest success. Communist troops had held the area around Sethbo for nearly a month, and by closing Highway 30 only 15 miles (22 kms) from Phnom Penh, they posed a considerable threat to the capital.
The attack caught the Communist troops by surprise. When they fled, they left food and weapons behind. It was taken by government troops. the fighting that followed caused considerable damage in Sethbo and the surrounding area. United states B-52 bombers supported the soldiers with air strikes.
