    President Felix Houphout-Boigny of the Ivory Coast, officially opened the Third Abidjan University Medical Meeting on Monday (November 20). The 5-day Conference - attended by 600 doctors, professors, scientists and journalists from 20 African, European and American countries - is chaired by Professor Robert Debre, the French President of the International Child Care Centre.

    The Conference is giving special attention to the study of cholera and trypanosomiase, two of the diseases causing the greatest concern throughout the African continent. There are also 15 separate symposia based on research done by the University Medical Centre (whose French initials are CHU).

    In his opening speech, Professor Debre called for the setting up of rural health teams, headed by highly-trained nurses, to travel through their territories giving medical and nutritional advice to the population.

    SYNOPSIS: The University of Abidjan third medical meeting was opened on Monday - to discuss the problems of health and nutrition, particularly in the developing nations.

    President Houphouet-Boigny of the Ivory Coast, opened the first session of the five-day conference, which is being attended by six hundred delegates from twenty African, European and American nations. They are primarily doctors, professors, scientists and journalists.

    University Rector Garignon conferred the Honoris Causa doctorate on Professor Andre Lemaire of France - for his help in setting up the work of the conference. The conference is giving special attention to the study of cholera and trypejosomiase - two of the diseases causing greatest concern throughout the African Continent. There are also fifteen separate symposia, based on research done at the University's Medical Centre.

    Also receiving an Honoris Causa doctorate, Professor Robert Debre, Chairman of the Conference and President of the International Child Care Centre. In his opening speech, Professor Debre called for the setting up of health teams, headed by highly-skilled nurses, to travel through rural communities giving medical and nutritional advice.
