  • Description

IN PROTEST AGAINST NUCLEAR TESTING BY RUSSIA AND THE UNITED STATES 600 DEMONSTRATOR STAGED A 24-HOUR SIT-DOWN STRIKE IN THE COPENHAGEN CITY SQUARE, SEPT 9. THE STRIKE WAS CALLED BY THE ORGANIZATION OF DANISH ANTI-NUCLEAR DEMONSTRATORS, WHO HAVE ALREADY HELD TWO DEMONSTRATIONS OUTSIDE THE SOVIET EMBASSY.

TO REACH THE CITY SQUARE THE CROWD MARCHED THROUGH THE STREETS WITH ANTI-NUCLEAR SLOGANS AND BANNERS. IT WAS A PEACEFUL DEMONSTRATION AND THE POLICE ESCORT KEPT THE MARCHERS IN LINE ALLOWING TRAFFIC TO PASS WITHOUT ANY DELAY.

WHEN THEY REACHED THE SQUARE THE DEMONSTRATORS SAT DOWN CHANTING AND SINGING AGAINST THE AMERICAN AND RUSSIAN TESTS. SOME HAD BROUGHT CHAIRS, OTHERS HAD RECORD PLAYERS. THEY GROUPED TOGETHER IN SECTIONS TO PROVIDE MEALS AND HOT DRINKS.
