  • Description

Indonesian's Defence Minister and Army chief, General Abdul Haris Nasution, returned to Djakarta, Jan 16, after concluding an arms pact with the Soviet Union. With him was Air Force Chief, Air Marshal Suryadarma, and other members of the delegation to Moscow. Foreign Minister Dr Subandrio, head of the mission, arrived in Djakarta the following day.

At Djakarta Airport, to welcome the two military leaders, was Mrs Nasution, her children and her nephew, wearing a captain's uniform. The official reception ws by Deputy Chief of Staff, General Gatot Subroto, and military attaches, with the representatives of Communist countries prominent among them.

At a Press conference, General Nasution said the arms bought in Moscow would double the fighting potential of the Indonesian forces quality and quantity., They included bomber and fighter aircraft, submarines, motor torpedo-boats, and equipment for the Army. Although no Russian technicians were expected to come to Indonesia, Indonesians would go to the Soviet union for training. The arms talks in Moscow followed "five unsuccessful attempts to gain the disputed territory of West New Guinea through the United Nations".

Reports from Moscow, Jan 7, said the soviet Government "met the request" of the Indonesian mission, which had been sent there "in line with measures for building up the armed forces, mainly in connection with the tension which has been increasing lately on the question of West Irian (Dutch New Guinea)". The Soviet Government supported the Indonesian demand for West New Guinea's "reunification" with Indonesia, and both sides reaffirmed their identity of views on colonialism and controlled disarmament.
