    FERDOWS WAS ONE OF THE TOWNS DEVASTATED IN LAST WEEK'S TWIN EARTHQUAKES THAT AFFECTED 100 TOWNS AND MUD-WALLED VILLAGES IN THE REMOTE, MOUNTAINOUS REGION OF EASTERN IRAN. THE DISASTER TOOK AN ESTIMATED 20,000 LIVES AND UNOFFICIAL FIGURES NUMBER 50,000 AMONG THE INJURED AND 100,000 HOMELESS.

    THE SHAH OF IRAN ORDERED A 24-HOUR OFFICIAL PERIOD OF MOURNING FOR THE VICTIMS OF THE EARTHQUAKES. IN THE TOWN OF KAKHK, WHICH WAS AT THE EPICENTRE OF THE FIRST UPHEAVAL LAST SATURDAY (31 AUGUST), 4,500 PEOPLE WERE KILLED. THE SHAH OF IRAN AND EMPRESS FARAH VISITED THE DEVASTATED TOWN AND OTHER AREAS AFFECTED BY THE EARTHQUAKES YESTERDAY (THURSDAY).

    THE RESCUE AND RELIEF OPERATIONS WENT INTO ACTION AS TEAMS FROM THE RED LION AND SUN (THE IRANIAN RED CROSS ORGANIZATION), THE ARMY, THE POLICE AND THE AIR FORCE WENT TO THE QUAKE-HIT AREAS.

    THE AUTHORITIES FLEW IN FIELD HOSPITALS FROM TEHERAN AND TOOK MEASURES TO GUARD AGAINST EPIDEMICS THREATENING THE PEOPLE LEFT HOMELESS WHO WERE LIVING IN THE OPEN OR IN TENTS.

    OFFICIALS ALSO HAD THE TASK OF PERFORMING BRIEF CEREMONIES AT THE SITES OF MASS GRAVES - CEREMONIES THAT WERE REPEATED IN TOWNS AND VILLAGES THROUGHOUT THE REGION.

    THE FEW HOSPITALS IN THE AREA WERE FILLED. THOUSANDS OF DOCTORS AND MEDICAL STUDENTS ON HOLIDAY JOINED THE TEAMS ALREADY IN THE DEVASTATED AREA.

    IN TEHERAN, EMPRESS FARAH GAVE BLOOD FOR THE DISASTER VICTIMS AT THE CITY HEALTH CENTRE. CABINET MINISTERS AND FOREIGN TOURISTS JOINED QUEUES OF OTHER DONORS.

    THE SHAH PERSONALLY SUPERVISED RELIEF AND RESCUE OPERATIONS FROM THE CAPITAL AND SENT PREMIER AMIR ABBAS HOVEIDA AND FIVE MINISTERS TO TAKE CONTROL AT THE DISASTER SCENE, WHICH COVERS ABOUT 750 SQUARE MILES (2,000 SQ. KMS.).
