  • Description

Part of the old airport building near Bombay's new International Air Terminal collapsed on Monday killing eight and injuring 34. Rescuers searched throughout the night for victims buried under the debris.

The accident occurred when construction workers were taking their lunch-break on the site of a new accessories overhaul shop for Air India in the old airport building at Santa Cruz... India's largest airport, 10 miles from Bombay. The ceiling was in an 832 square foot compressor room. A 2 1/2 million pound (45 million rupee) extension to the new terminal nearby was due to begin this week. (The expansion is to accommodate Jumbo Jets which will use the airport from next March).

Firemen and workers searched the huge pile of debris after the concrete ceiling caved in. They worked into the night, under floodlights, in the hope of rescuing survivors. Eight people are known to have died. 16 of the 34 people injured have now been discharged from hospital after treatment. Eleven women and two children were among the injured.
