  • Description

As the long, hot Australian summer begins, the snow on the slopes of the Snowy Mountains and other skiing areas has melted away, but skiers who want to train for the next season's competitive events have found another way of keeping their programmes going.

SYNOPSIS: Acrobatic skiing enthusiasts have set up an artificial slope on the edge of the water in Sydney Harbour -- where they are continuing to practise their skills and develop new techniques. Water being a softer cushion for a bad landing than hard earth, they can make their mistakes in comparative safety. One top snow skier who is working on the slope at the moment is Randy Weimann of the United States, who is recognised as one of the world's best acrobatic skiers.

Weimann recently won the Australian Hot-Dog ski title at Perisher Valley and is at present trying to perfect a double backward somersault--if he can do it he'll be the world's first exponent. Experts predict that he can pull it off and that his current practice on the Sydney Harbour ramp will take him closer to his goal.

Acrobatic skiing is a dangerous enough pastime on water -- let alone on snow -- but Randy Weimann is instructing Australian skiers in freestyle and acrobatic techniques because he feels they have great potential, despite the lack of a year-round snow base. So by the time the new season gets underway these skiers are hoping that they will have enough practice to compete on an equal footing with the best from all over the world.
