  • Description

The Greek and turkish consuls-general in Nicosia, representing their respective Governments, attended the three-hour conference at Government House, March 9, for the first time in the current series of talks on the future of British military bases on Cyprus.

Agenda for the meeting included matters affecting Greece and Turkey such as a treaty of alliance between these two countries and the Cyprus Republic, the tri-partite headquarters, the question of "most favoured nation" clauses in the Cyprus treaties, and technical points concerning Greek and Turkish military contingents due to arrive on the island after Independence Day.

No communique was issued after the meeting but later Archbishop Makarios said that the five-party meeting reviewed all subjects on which agreement in principle had been reached during the sixteen-meeting series. Talks have now been going on for two-weeks and all the main issues are still unresolved.

A later meeting that same day discussed the question of N.A.A.F.I. imports and Customs relevant to British forces in the new Republic.
