  • Description

SENATOR ROBERT KENNEDY LAST NIGHT (TUESDAY) BECAME THE FIRST OF THE KENNEDY BROTHERS TO LOSE AN ELECTION, AFTER HIS PRESIDENTIAL HOPES WERE DIMMED BY HIS SURPRISING LOSS TO SENATOR EUGENE McCARTHY IN THE OREGON PRIMARIES. BUT DESPITE SENATOR McCARTHY'S WIN--BY 44 PER CENT OF THE VOTE TO 38 FOR SENATOR KENNEDY -- POLITICAL EXPERTS REGARD MR. HUBERT HUMPHREY RATHER THAN EITHER OF THE SENATORS AS THE LIKELY WINNER OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY ENDORSEMENT FOR PRESIDENT.

VICE-PRESIDENT HUMPHREY GOT SIX PER CENT OF OREGON VOTING WHEN SUPPORTERS WROTE IN HIS NAME ON THE BALLOT. PRESIDENT JOHNSON, WHO HAS WITHDRAWN FROM THE RACE SINCE NOMINATIONS CLOSED, RECEIVED 13 PER CENT.

IN THE REPUBLICAN CAMP, MR. RICHARD NIXON WAS THE MAJOR SCORER. HE EASILY SWEPT ASIDE A CHALLENGE BY THE WELL-FINANCED CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR RONALD REAGAN. MR. NIXON TOOK ABOUT 72 PER CENT OF THE VOTE, LEAVING 22 PER CENT FOR GOVERNOR REAGAN AND SEVEN PER CENT FOR GOVERNOR NELSON ROCKEFELLER OF NEW YORK.

AFTER RESULTS WERE ANNOUNCED LAST NIGHT, THE HOPEFUL CANDIDATES COMMENTED. SENATOR KENNEDY TOOK A SPORTING ATTITUDE.

SENATOR McCARTHY WAS FRANKLY JUBILANT AT THE RESULT, WITH A REFERENCE TO THE FAMOUS "OREGON TRAIL".
