  • Description

President Suharto of Indonesia was greeted by West Irian tribesmen on Saturday (3 March) when he arrived to open the Freeport Indonesia Copper Mine in the Jayawijaya Mountains, 2,500 miles (4,000KM) east of Djakarta.

The mine, which has been built with financial assistance from Japan, West Germany and the United Sates, is the first foreign venture to begin production since President Suharto invited overseas investment in 1966.

The new mine -- which cost GBP 60,800,000 (U.S. $150,000,000) will produce high-grade copper ore for export. Its constriction has been hailed by foreign investors and Indonesian officials as a major engineering feat, and as a project which, it is hoped, will pave the way for further investment in the country.

A 63-mile (100 km) road was built through mangrove swamps and steep terrain to connect the mine with the nearest port.
