  • Description

The National Union of Ghana Students this morning vehemently condemned the leaders of yesterday's abortive counter-coup and congratulated the soldiers through whose loyalty Ghana has been saved from near catastrophe and chaos. The Union described the abortive coup, as "most unfortunate" and an irresponsible adventurism".

At a rally at the University Square, Legon, the students sang mourning hymns and demonstrated. A two-minute silence was observed in memory of the late distinguished soldier, Lt-General Kotoka.

Some of the students carried placards some of which read, "Hang the traitors", We Greatly mourn the death of Lt-General Kotoka","the name of Kotoka is enshrined in our history". Later the students assembled at the Black Star Square from where they began a solemn march through the principal streets of Accra. They sang mourning hymns and demonstrated in support of the N.L.C.

At a news conference, the students had earlier in a resolution expressed shock at the action of a small section of the Reconnaissance regiment of the Ghana Army, and noted the irresponsible act which would have disturbed the calm and stability of the state. The resolution condemned the leaders and their attempt and called on the N.L.C. to conduct a full investigation into the matter and deal drastically with the leaders of the insurrection.
