Background: SWEDISH FARMER BO WALDEGAARD, WHO LEARNED TO DRIVE AT THE WHEEL OF A TRACTOR, YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) PILOTED A WEST GERMAN PORSCHE TO VICTORY IN THE MONTE CARLO RALLY, THE WORLD'S TOUGHEST WINTER MOTORING EVENT. WALDEGAARD SNATCHED VICTORY FROM LAST YEAR'S WINNER, BRITAIN'S VIC ELFORD, IN A DRAMA-PACKED NIGHT RUN THROUGH THE FRENCH ALPS.

IN A BRILLIANT DISPLAY OF DRIVING, 26-YEAR-OLD WALDEGAARD TOPPED MORE THAN 100 MPH (160 KPH) ON SOME SECTIONS OF THE TORTUOUS, ICE-PACKED MOUNTAIN ROADS.

WALDEGAARD STARTED THE FINAL 416-MILE (670 KILOMETRE) STAGE OF THE RALLY WITH AN 89-SECOND LEAD OVER ELFORD, WHO WAS ALSO IN A PORSCHE. AT ONE POINT ELFORD REGAINED THE LEAD, BUT SOON AFTERWARDS HE CAREERED OFF A BEND AND HIT A TREE NEAR THE LONELY VILLAGE OF SCIERI DE SOSPLOS. HIS PORSCHE WAS SEVERELY DAMAGED, BUT NEITHER HE NOR HIS CO-DRIVER DAVID STONE WERE INJURED.

SO WALDEGAARD WAS LEFT WITH A CLEAR LEAD, AND HE AND CO-DRIVER LARS HELMER WERE GREETED WITH THE TRADITIONAL BOUQUETS AND CHAMPAGNE AS THEY CROSSED THE FINISHING LINE.

WINNERS OF THE LADIES SECTION WERE MRS. PAT MOSS-CARLSSON AND CO -DRIVER MISS ELIS NYSTRON IN A LANCIA FULVIA.
