    A group of 27 sick and seriously injured Pakistani prisoners of war finally left New Delhi for home on Friday (25 February) after engine trouble in a Red Cross aircraft had delayed their departure three times.

    The Pakistani soldiers left on a repaired aircraft which had brought 17 wounded Indian prisoners of war from Islamabad late on Thursday evening (24 February).

    SYNOPSIS: The Pakistani prisoners, which Indian army medical personnel helped into the aircraft, were mostly stretcher cases with severe body wounds or limbs missing Many of them clutched copies of the koran, the holy book of Islam, presented to them by the Delhi Citizens' Council. The exchange of prisoners was the first since the Indo-Pakistan war ended last December.

    The Indian prisoners who arrived at New Delhi also were mainly stretcher cases. One had lost all his toes from frostbite, and others had limbs and eyes missing. Nineteen Indian prisoner were originally scheduled to fly to New Delhi, but one had died of severe body wounds, and another was too ill to travel.
