  • Description

In France proposals to ban high-powered motorbikes from public roads prompted a noisy protest in Paris on Friday (22 September). Several thousand motorcyclists roared through the centre of the city in a large pack to demonstrate their opposition to suggestions by road safety officials that machines over 750 c.c. engine capacity should be restricted to race tracks.

SYNOPSIS: The pack, numbering around 5,000 motorcyclists, gathered near the Bastille in central Paris to begin their ride of protest. The demonstration was provoked by restriction proposals put forward by the Secretary General of a ministerial committee on road safety, who blamed high-powered motorbikes for nearly 1,000 deaths and 10,000 injuries each year. Police gave permission for the protest which led to traffic jams on the Champs Elysee and other main avenues.

There were scuffles between some policemen and motorcyclists but the more serious incidents came later when about 30 riders were injured, ten of them badly, in a pile-up on one of the boulevards.
