  • Description

DENMARK - WITH MANY OF ITS TERRITORIES ON SCATTERED ISLANDS EAST OF THE BALTIC SEA HAS LONG HAD A TRANSPORT PROBLEM. ANOTHER STEP IN WELDING THE ISLANDS CLOSER TOGETHER WILL BE MADE EARLY IN THE NEW YEAR WHEN A NEW TRAIN FERRY COMES INTO SERVICE ACROSS THE STOREBAELT. THE STOREBAELT IS A STRETCH OF WATER BETWEEN THE ISLAND OF SJAELLAND (ON WHICH LIES THE DANISH CAPITAL, COPENHAGEN) AND THE ISLAND OF FYN. THE FERRY WILL OPERATE BETWEEN THE PORTS OF KORSOER (ON SJAELLAND) AND NYBORG.

THE NEW FERRY WILL BE ONE OF THE LARGEST OF ITS TYPE IN THE WORLD. IT IS 390 FEET (119 METRES) LONG AND IS 53 FEET (15.5 METRES) WIDE. IT CAN CARRY 43 FULLY-LADEN RAILWAY WAGGONS.

THE FERRY IS DESIGNED EXCLUSIVELY TO CARRY RAILWAY WAGGONS: IT HAS NO PASSENGER ACCOMODATION. IT IS BUILT ON THE "ROLL-ON, ROLL-OFF" PRINCIPLE.

THE NEW FERRY - THE "ASA THOR" - JOINS A BUSY FERRY ROUTE. BETWEEN KORSOER AND NYBORG THERE ARE ALREADY EIGHT PASSENGER-TRAIN FERRIES AND FIVE CAR FERRIES OPERATING. THE JOURNEY TAKES BETWEEN AN HOUR AND NINETY MINUTES.
