  • Description

The gaiety and music of 19th-century Vienna - now relegated to the world of theatrical romance - came to life again recently at the Vienna Opera Ball, held for the fifth time since the war.

Members of the States Opera Ballet - watched by a large audience, including the Austrian President, Dr. Schaerf, - danced to graceful Strauss walzes waltzes.

The opera House was transformed into a vast ball-room, and thousands of carnations were imported from Italy for the occasion. Vienna's first Opera Ball was held in 1877 and was conducted by Johann Strauss.
