  • Description

Israel handed over the small Suez Gulf oil town of Ras Sudar to the United Nations on Friday (14 November) ready for its return to Egypt under the recent Israeli-Egyptian interim peace agreement.

It was the first withdrawal by Israel under the agreement from Egyptian territory occupied in the 1967 war. The oil installations themselves were handed over on 10 October to United States technicians.

The Egyptians will move into the town on Sunday (16 November). The Israeli departure was originally scheduled for Saturday but was brought forward a day because of the Jewish Sabbath.

The Ras Sudar oilfields have been producing 4,000 barrels a day. Larger oilwells and installations at Abu Rudeis, farther south, will be vacated by Israel on 30 November.

Major-General Bengt Liljestrand, Swedish Commander of the United Nations Emergency Forces in the area, who witnessed the handing-over of Ras Sudar, said the procedures had all taken place perfectly. He thanked the Israelis for their co-operation.

The withdrawal covered the small Arab town with its central mosque, and the adjoining area along the Gulf. Eventually, the Israelis will vacate a coastal strip stretching from Suez to Abu Rudeis, 80 miles (130 km) south.

Withdrawals in central Sinai, including the strategic Mitla and Gidi passes will take place early next year.
