    MORE THAN SIX MILLION ROUNDS OF AMMUNITION AND 1,500 WEAPONS WERE RECOVERED FROM AN ARMED TRAWLER DRIVEN ON TO THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE COAST IN FLAMES BY AMERICAN WARSHIPS AND PLANES ON SATURDAY.

    AMERICAN AND SOUTH KOREAN TROOPS WHO TOOK PART IN THE CAPTURE OF THE VESSEL WERE SUBSEQUENTLY DECORATED BY SOUTH VIETNAMESE HEAD OF STATE, GENERAL NGUYEN VAN THIEU, AND PRIME MINISTER NGUYEN CAO KY.

    THE 120-FOOT (37 METRE) STEEL-HULLED VESSEL, WHICH FLEW NO FLAG, WAS WRACKED BY EXPLOSIONS AND RAN INTO SANDBANK AFTER THE TWO HOUR BATTLE WITH AMERICAN NAVAL FORCES, SOUTH KOREAN ARTILLERY UNITS, AND U.S. HELICOPTERS.

    THE TRAWLER WAS GROUNDED ON THE COAST OF QUANT NGAI PROVINCE SOME 350 MILES (566 KILOMETRES) NORTH EAST OF SAIGON. IT WAS CARRYING GUNS, RIFLES AND ROCKETS LAUNCHERS.

    THE SHIP WAS SHOWN TO THE PRESS ON WEDNESDAY. THE SAME DAY SOUTH VIETNAMESE HEAD OF STATE, GENERAL NGUYEN VAN THIEU AND PRIME MINISTER NGUYEN CAO KY INSPECTED DANANG BASE DURING A TOUR OF THE NORTHERN CITIES OF HUE AND QUANG TRI.

    AT DANANG THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE LEADERS DECORATED SOME OF THE U.S. SAILORS AND SOUTH KOREAN SOLDIERS WHO TOOK PART IN THE BATTLE WITH THE TRAWLER.
