    IN THE JAPANESE SHIPBUILDING YARDS OF NAGOYA YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) 15 MEN DIED WHEN FIRE BROKE OUT IN PART OF A TANKER ONLY PARTLY BUILT.

    TWO HUNDRED MEN WERE WORKING IN THE INTERIOR OF THE VESSEL, THE BRIDGESTONE MARU, OF 33,800 TONS, WHEN FIRE BROKE OUT NEAR THE MIDSHIP AREA.

    MOST OF THE MEN INSIDE THE VESSEL WERE BROUGHT TO SAFETY. THE MEN WHO DIED ARE REPORTED TO HAVE SUFFOCATED WHEN OVERCOME BY SMOKE AND FUMES.

    THE BRIDGESTONE MARU, LAUNCHED ON CHRISTMAS DAY OF LAST YEAR, WAS DUE TO HAVE BEEN COMPLETED IN APRIL. SHE IS THE SECOND LARGEST GAS TANKER IN THE WORLD, AND WHEN COMPLETED WILL SAIL BETWEEN JAPAN AND THE PERSIAN GULF.

    THE FIRE, BELIEVED TO HAVE STARTED WHEN SPARKS IGNITED A PLASTIC SUBSTANCE USED TO LINE THE BULKHEADS.

    THE BLAZE WAS EVENTUALLY BROUGHT UNDER CONTROL WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF THREE FIRE UNITS EQUIPPED WITH CHEMICAL SPRAYS.
